Question 30907: Can you please help me with this problem? I think it's linear. It would help if you could show me how to set up the equation with step by step instructions. Thanks! ** A customer has asked a caterer to provide 60 lb. of nuts, 60% of which are to be cashews. The caterer has available mixtures of 70% cashews and 45% cashews. How many pounds of each mixture should be used to meet the customer's needs? Answer by Paul(988) (Show Source):
Let the mixutre for 45% be x
Let the mixture for 70% be y
y=60-x (subsitution)
45x+70y=60(60)
Apply subsitution:
45x+70(60-x)=3600
45x-70x+4200=3600
-25x=-600
x=24
y=60-24
y=36 Hence, about 24 lb of miture for 45% is needed and about 36lb of mixture for 70% is needed.
