let the hose do the job of filling in x hours
the inlet pipe does in x-1 hours
.
The hose will do 1/x of the job in 1 hour
Theinlet pipe will do the job in 1/x-1 hour
.
They both will do 1/x + 1/x-1 of the job in 1 hour
Add the two fractions. LCM = x(x-1)
.
x-1+x / x(x-1)
2x-1/x^2-x of the job they do in 1 hour
For completing the job they will take x^2-x / 2x-1 hours
x^2-x / 2x-1 = 6
x^2-x = 6(2x-1)
x^2-x = 12x-6
x^2-13x+5=0
find the roots x1,x2
x1= 13 + sqrt(169-20)/2
x1=12.6 hours

x2= 13 - sqrt(169-20)/2
x2= 0.39 hours ( this is not possible )
The hose takes 12.6 hours to do the job alone
The inlet pipe takes 11.6 hours to do the job alone
