Question 306666: Two cars pass each other at 4:00 at an overpass. One car is headed north at an average speed of 60mph and the other is headed east at an average speed of 50mph.
At what time will the cars be 104 miles apart?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The cars are travelling at right angles
So the pythagorean theorem will apply.
Let t be the time they take respectively so that they are at a distance of 104 miles
One car speed = 50 mph and the other car speeed = 60 mph
distance traveled by one car = 50t and distance traveled by other car = 60t
(50t)^2 + (60t)^2 = 104^2
2500t^2 + 3600t^2 = 10816
6100 t^2= 10816
t^2 = 10816/6100
t= sqrt ( 10816 / 6100)
t=1.33 hours
