Let the base price be "x"
Equation:
x + 0.08x = 1200
1.08x = 1200
x = 1200/1.08
x = $1111.11

Pre-Tax*(1+8/100)=Post-Tax

1.08x=1,200
x=1,200/1.08
x=$1,111.11 was the original price before tax.
