A Photographer makes two sizes of pictures, each with the same area. One is a rectangle and the other a square. if the length of the rectangle is 3 inches greater and the width is 2 inches shorter than the length of one side of the square picture, what are the dimensions of the picture? You can put this solution on YOUR website! A Photographer makes two sizes of pictures, each with the same area.
One is a rectangle and the other a square. if the length of the rectangle is 3
inches greater and the width is 2 inches shorter than the length of one side
of the square picture, what are the dimensions of the picture?
:
Let x = side of the square
then
(x+3) = length of side of the rectangle
(x-2) = width of the rectangle
:
Rect area = square area
(x+3)(x-2) = x^2
FOIL
x^2 - 2x + 3x - 6 = x^2
Subtract x^2 from both sides
x^2 - x^2 + x - 6 = 0
x - 6 = 0
x = 6 inches is the side of the square
then
6+3 = 9" is the length of the rectangle
6-2 = 4" is the width of the rectangle
:
Check solutions by finding the areas
square area: 6^2 = 36
rect area: 9*4 = 36
You can put this solution on YOUR website! x^2=(x-2)(x+3)
x^2=x^2+x-6
x^2-x^2-x=-6
-x=-6
x=6 ans. for the side of the square.
Proof:
6^2=(6-2)(6+3)
36=4*9
36=36
You can put this solution on YOUR website! let the length of the side of square be x
width of rectangle is x-2
Length of rectangle = x+3
Area = L*W
(x-2)(x+3)=x^2
x^2+x-6=x^2
X-6=0
x=6 the side length of square
x-2 = rectangle width = 4
x+3= rectangle length = 6+3=9
