by a body falling freely from rest in t seconds is approximated by s = 16t^2. 
A pebble is droped into the well and takes 3 sec to hit the water. How far down
is the surface of the water?

Substitute 3 seconds for the time t in the equation:

s = 16t²

Instead of t write (3)

s = 16(3)²

s = 16(9)

s = 144 feet
