Question 299808: In the playoff game, the ball was carried by either Anderson or Brown on 21 plays. Anderson gained 36 yards and Brown gained 54 yards. If Brown averaged twice as many yards per carry as Anderson, then on how many plays did Anderson carry the ball?
2 ( 36 / x ) = 54 / ( 21 – x )
How would i solve this equation? As well did i set the equation up right?

2 ( 36 / x ) = 54 / ( 21 – x )
How would i solve this equation?
------
Equations:
Quantity: a + b = 21 plays
--------------
Anderson average: 36/a
Brown average: 54/b
------------------------
Average Equation: 54/b = 2(36/a)
------
Modify the Average Equation:
54a = 72b
a = (4/3)b
------
Substitute for "b" and solve for "a":
a = (4/3)(21-a)
3x = 84-4a
7a = 84
a = 12 (# of times Anderson carried the ball)

You did set up the equation correctly, although I would’ve made Anderson’s carries equal to A, instead of x

Anyway, your equation, %282%2A36%29%2F%28x%29+=+54%2F%2821-x%29 would be solved by cross-multiplication, which would give us:
2(36)(21 – x) = 54x

1,512 – 72x = 54x

-72x – 54x = - 1,512

-126x = -1,512

Amount of carries that Anderson had, or x was: %28-1512%29%2F-126 or highlight_green%2812%29
