The sum of two numbers is 140 and their difference is 16. Find the numbers. Solve algeraically. I know that the two numbers are 78 and 62 I just dont know how to slove algebraically. This is what i have so far.
Legend let x=1st number x+x+1=140
let x+1=2nd number

Be a bit more careful with your spelling. algeraically slove dont
A good math student is careful about details.
x+y=140
x-y=16
add the 2 equations
2x=156
x=78
y=78-16=62
The second number can't be x+1 since the difference is 16.
If you had continued with x+x+1 you would have
2x+1=140
2x=139
x=139/2=
x=69.5
