I would use quadratic formula for this particular problem:
x=%285%2B-sqrt%2825-4%2A7%2A-1%29%29%2F%2814%29
you should wind up with x=%285%2B-sqrt%2853%29%29%2F%2814%29
this is as far you can really go with it without getting into decimals because 53 is a prime number and it is not possible to reduce the radical. But if you want to use decimals I'll save you the trouble and tell you your solution set would be x= -.163 and .877
