Question 296783: For the functions f(x)=2x^2-3x and g(x)=4x-1, find f[g(x)].
Could anybody please tell me the formula(s) I should use to try and solve this? I missed class that week and can't find an explanation in the book. I have a test tomorrow that will cover this type of problem, but I don't know the steps. Any help is appreciated!!!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
f%28x%29=2x%5E2-3x Start with the first function.

f%28g%28x%29%29=2%284x-1%29%5E2-3%284x-1%29 On the left side, replace 'x' with 'g(x)'. On the right side, replace each 'x' with 4x-1. Note: we replaced 'x' with 'g(x)' which in this case is g%28x%29=4x-1

f%28g%28x%29%29=2%2816x%5E2-8x%2B1%29-3%284x-1%29 FOIL

f%28g%28x%29%29=32x%5E2-16x%2B2-12x%2B3 Distribute.

f%28g%28x%29%29=32x%5E2-28x%2B5 Combine like terms.

So the answer is f%28g%28x%29%29=32x%5E2-28x%2B5
