Question 295572: One number is 1 more than twice another. Their product is 55. Find the numbers.
What came to my head was 5 and 11 but my professor counted off for not showing work. Can someone explain the formula so that I can understand how to get the solution?
Thanks!!
Mindy

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a>2b
ab=55
a=55/b
55/b > 2b
2b^2<55
b^2<27.5
b<6
.
If b=5 then a=11
if b=1 then a=55
if b=2 then a=27.5
if b=4 then a=13.75
Since it wasn't stated that the numbers are integers, any of the above combinations are possible.
