Question 294112: Hello sorry to bother you but am having a lot of trouble with this linear equation I was told to equal the y to zero then solve and then the x to zero then solve, The fist time I did y and got 5 for y, I had put the x as zero which eliminated the -3/4x and then just left my five? Well now this solving for x for this one is really confusing me, think I'm doing it completely wrong! I appreciate the help, thanks so much!!! Jenny the equation is
y=-3/4 x + 5 Thanks for your help!!
my email is jenncocoa1801@yahoo.com!!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

y=-3/4 x + 5

You have 1 equation and 2 variables. There is not way to solve it.
You can graph it. It's a linear eqn, meaning the graph is a straight line.
-------------
To graph it, you need 2 points. One way to get 2 points is to make y = 0 and find x, then make x = 0 and find y.
Then draw a line thru them.
Every point on the line is a "solution" to the equation, meaning you can sub the x and y values, and the eqn is true.

As several tutors have said, you cannot solve the equation. You can find solutions for the equation and you can graph it.
It sounds like someone told you how to graph it.
y=-3/4 x + 5
I will assume that you mean
y=-(3/4)*x + 5
so we let x=0 and we get y=5
plot (0,5)
now let y=0 and find x
0=-(3/4)x+5
-5=-3/4*x
multiply by -4/3
-5*(-4/3)=x
20/3=x
(20/3,0)
plot this
20/3 is almost 7 it is 6 2/3 or 6.67
We will use the slope -3/4 to find the next integer point
From (0,5) we go down 3 for y and over 4 for x
(4,2) is easier to plot that (20/3, 0)
