Question 29230: Please help me solve this word problem, it has got to be easy but my brain is fried...The Jaspers have a jar where they collect nickels, dimes, and quarters. When they count the change in the jar, there are twice as many nickels as there are quarters. If there is $15.30 in dimes and $74.80 in all, how many quarters are there? Here is what we have tried...74.80-15.30=2n;59.50=2n;n=29.75..but that just doesn't work out right. please help I need it for school Monday. Thank you

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let the nickels be 2x
Let the quarters be x
Nickel value x 100 = 5
Quarter value x 100= 25
Total value x 100 = 7480
DIme total value x 100 = 1530
Equaion:
1530+5(2x)+25(x)=7480
10x+25x=5950
35x=5950
x=170
2(170)=340
Hence, there are 170 quarters and 340 nickels.
