Question 29168: for equations in slope-intercept form (y=mx+b) , why is m used to represent slope?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! There is no answer to that question.
m is the standard letter used all over the world to represent gradient.
You cannot just use any letter.
You might as well argue why is the letter 's' written in a cursive way? Why isn't it written using straight lines? I'm afraid it's the way the world uses it so you also have to adapt to this change.
