Question 28909: Jim can run 5 miles per hour on level ground on a still day. One windy day, he runs 10 miles per hour with the wind, and in the same amount of time runs 7 miles against the wind. What is the rate of the wind.
Can you please help me set this up, I can't figure out how to write the equations.

Answer by Paul(988) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
His speed of the stillground = 5mph
Let the speed of the wind be x
Equation:
10%2F%285%2Bx%29=7%2F%285-x%29
Cross multiply:
7(5+x)=10(5-x)
35+7x=50-10x
17x=15
x=0.88 (rounded)

Hence, the speed of the wind is 0.88mph.
