Question 289015: Hi Thank you for your help. I think this may be the topic.
I've been trying to figure out this word problem, but for some reason I think the answer is 40 miles:
A car rental agency rents a certain car for $40 per day with unlimited mileage or $24 per day plus $0.20 per mile. How far can a customer drive this car per day for the $24 option to cost no more than the unlimited mileage option?
I have set up like this: 0.20x + 24y (less than or equal to) 40 and I solved for X by making y 0 and dividing 40 by .20 which gave me 200. Then I multipied that by $0.20 per mile which gave me the answer of 40. Please let me know where I went wrong or if I even understood the question.
Thank you!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
24 + 0.2m = 40
+0.2m+=+cross%2840+-+24%29+=+16+

+0.2m+%2F+0.2+=+16+%2F+0.2+

m = 80 miles and bob's your uncle!

The other tutor did a good job of presenting the problem and its solution.
I just want to mention why the equation is y=24+.20x
You only pay the $24 once. But you pay 20 cents for every mile (x)
and the result is the total cost y.
We set it up as equal because we want "no more than" meaning "the max" meaning it can be 40 but no more. So we stop at 40 exactly.
But we aren't really interested in 39.5 just 40.
The other rental plan is y=40.
