You can put this solution on YOUR website!
d+n=19
5*10+2*5=60 cents
60+85=145
10d+5n=145
d+n=19
d=10 n=9
check
10-5=5*10
9-2=7*5
5*10+7*5=85
Answer d)9

Danial has 19 coins in dimes and nickels . after spending 85 cents , he has 5 dimes and 2 nickles left . how many nickels did Daniel have to start with ?
A 2 b 19 c 7 d 9 e 17

D = number of dimes
N = number of nickels
10D + 5N = value of money in cents

Since he had 19 coins, the first equation is

D + N = 19

the "5 dimes and 2 nickels" he had left only tells us that
he had 60 cents left. It did not matter how many of each
coin he had, but all that matters is that he had 60 cents left

So to form the equation,

Value of money MINUS 85 cents EQUALS 60 cents, or

      (10D + 5N) - 85 = 60

So you have this system of equations:

system%28D%2BN=19%2C%2810D%2B5N%29-85=60%29

Simplify and then solve that system and get

D = 10 dimes and 9 nickels.

Since the question asked how many nickels, the
answer is 9, choice d
