Question 286529: Solve the equation x+3=the square root of 7x+29 and check for extraneous roots
I factored it into x^2-X-20=0 but got stuck Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! x+3=sqrt(7x+29)
(x+3)^2=7x+29
x^2+3x+3x+9=7x+29
x^2+6x+9=7x+29
x^2-x-20=0
You did not factor it to get this.
You multiplied it out. To factor means find the factors of.
That is exactly what you couldn't do.
Do not mix X and x they are not the same
What are the factors of -20 that add up to -1?
-5*4=-20
-5+4=-1
(x+4)(x-5)=0
x=-4 is extraneous
x=5
