Question 285516: Hi! Here's another simple problem which, albeit I had busted my brain for 2 hours just trying to solve it, seems to have no end for me. Here goes:
A man made 20% of the cost by selling pocketbooks at $7.50 a piece. How many pocketbooks did he sell?
Once again, thanks very much! :)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The profit is %20 of the costs. The sales price is $7.50
So Profits+=+0.20%2ACosts
Costs+%2B+Profits+=+SalesPrice
Costs+%2B+%280.20%2ACosts%29+=+7.50
1.20%2ACosts+=+7.50e
Costs+=+6.25
So he makes 1.25 profit per sale.
How many did he sell?
You can't get there from here. The problem doesn't provide enough information to calculate that. You need to know total sales, total costs or total profits -- you need 'something more' in order to figure out 'how many'
