Question 284377: Car Speedometer. The speedometer of Terry’s Honda CR-V is designed to be accurate with tires of radius 14in.
Find the number of rotations of a tire in 1 hour if the car is driven at 55mph.
Suppose that oversize tires of 16in. are placed on the car. If the car is now driven for 1 hour with the speedometer reading 55mph, how far has the car gone? If the speed limit is 55mph does Terry deserve a speeding ticket?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
circumference is 2*pi*r
2*3.14*14=one rotation
55*5280*12 is 55 m in inches
(55*5280*12)/(2*3.14*14) is the number of rotations in 55 miles in one hour
39636.0 rotations with 14 inch tires
34681.5... rotations with 16 inch tires
There is more to speeding tickets than the speed limit and speed of the car.
Normal speed of traffic must be considered. Traffic conditions too.
Stick to math and stay away from law.

I don't have an algebraic answer, but from an arithmetic perspective:
Break the first part down, by asking how many INCHES 55 miles is.
55%2A12%2A5280 = 3,484,800 inches
3484800+%2F+14 = highlight%28248914%29 rotations.
===
Second part, is how many MILES in 248,914 2/7 rotations.
248914+%2A+16 = highlight%283982628%29 inches.
===
How many MILES in 3.982 million inches? 3982628+%2F+12+%2F+5280 = 62.85 miles.

It is subjective as to if he deserves a speeding ticket; I would suggest not, would depend upon how hungry the jurisdiction was for revenue :).
