Let h be the height of the flagpole. Since the angle of elevation is 30, the side opposite that angle is half the hypotenuse of the triangle formed by the person, the bottom and the top of the flagpole. So with the hypotenuse being 2*h, using the Pythagorean Theorem we have;
(2h)^2 = h^2 + 85^2
4h^2 = h^2 + 85^2
3h^2 = 85^2
Solve for h.
