Question 281871: Hi. I would be forever grateful if anyone can help me on this one word problem. It is as follows:
A woman bought oranges at $1.44 a dozen. She sold 4/5 of them at the rate of 4 for 60 cents and the rest at the rate of 2 for 25 cents. She gained $5.00 in the transaction. How many oranges did she buy?
Thank you very much for the time and help!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
She buys X oranges at 12 each
she sells 4X/5 for 3 profit and X/5 at 1/2 profit
profit is thus 12X/5 + X/10 = 500
24X/10 + X/10 = 25X/10 = 500
X = 500x 10 /25 = 200 oranges
