Question 279807: Empirical Rule and Chebyshev
For #1 through 5 assume a normal (or close to normal) distribution.
1) The average June temperature in Freeport is 71°F with a standard deviation of 5°.
a) There’s a 68% chance that a given temperature falls between what 2 values?
b) There’s a 95% chance that a temp falls between __________ and _____________ ?
c) There’s a 97.5% chance? ________ and _____________
2) Kingsmen Basketball: The average number of points scored per player per game is 18 points with a standard deviation of 4 points.
a) 68% of the data falls within what range?
b) 95% of the data falls within what range?
c) 99.7% of the data falls within what range?
3) The return on a portfolio investment per month is on average $86 with a standard deviation of $5.50. Find the intervals of data for 68%, 95% and 99.7% of the data.
4) The average weight of a seal found on the south shore of Long Island is 78 pounds with a standard deviation of 7.3 pounds.
a) There is a 95% chance that a given seal’s weight would fall within what interval?
b) What percent of seals found would weigh 78 pounds or less?
c) What percent would weigh 85.3 pounds or less?
Hint: The mean represent the half way dividing line of the data.
5) The average student’s probability test score is 83% with a standard deviation of 2.8 points.
a) What percent of the students’ results lie between 77.4 and 88.6 percentage points?
b) What percent of the students’ scores are less that 85.8?
6) The heights of 10 students are measured and recorded:
58” 60” 60” 61” 64” 65” 66” 66” 68” 69”
a) What type of distribution should student’s heights approximate?
b) Find the mean of the data.
c) Find the standard deviation of the data.
d) Find the range of values that would contain 99.7% of the data.
7) Ms. Smith’s algebra test scores were skewed due to unequal math background of her students. (The data is skewed, not normal.) The average algebra test score was 78% with a standard deviation of 2.5%.
a) What range of scores contains 75% of the data?
b) What range contains 94% of the data?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
i dont wanna jump to any conclusions but ur making urself look bad, its normally 1 question per post, listing questions as if u coppied and pasted part of ur homework or studyguide just isnt cool. if u gave some explanation as to uve tried these, and posted what u have tried so far then id be glad to help but, please dont just post 5+ questions without some real reason given, to mee it looks like somone ran out of time to do these or there to lazy to try them and hoping some one on here will do all the questions for u...i as a free tutor dont have the time to answer 50 questions for 1 submission, plus i cant up my score..lol i highly suggest u submit only the ones u dont understand and put what work u do have down so we as tutors can help steer u in the right direction.
