Question 2793: The two biggest lakes in Manitoba are lake Winninpeg and Lake Brandon. Their combined area is about 29800 km^2. The area of lake Brandon is 700 km^2 less than one quarter of the area of lake Winnipeg. What is the area of each lake? Answer by sujatha.krishna(11) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Assume, area of Lake Winnipeg is x km^2 and area of Lake Brandon is y km^2
Their combined area is 29800 km^2
x + y = 29800
Area of lake brandon is 700 km^2 less than a quarter of area of lake winnipeg
x/4 - 700 = y
x - 2800 = 4y
x - 4y = 2800
-x + 4y = -2800
Solving the 2 equations now
x + y = 29800
-x + 4y = -2800
-----------------
5y = 27000
-----------------
So y = 27000/5 = 5400
And x= 29800 - 5400 = 24400
So area of lake winnipeg is 24400 km^2 and area of lake brandon is 5400 km^2
