You can put this solution on YOUR website!
X%2A%283mi%2Fhr%29+=+4mi+-+X%2A%282mi%2Fhr%29
Simplify
%283Xmi%2Fhr%29+=+4mi+-+%282Xmi%2Fhr%29
Add %282Xmi%2Fhr%29 to both sides
%285Xmi%2Fhr%29+=+4mi Divide both sides by 5mi/hr
X+=+%284%2F5%29h
We can convert this to minutes
1 hour = 60 min
%284%2F5%29+%2A+60+=+48min
They will meet each other 48 min after leaving their houses.

3*x+2*x=4
5x=4
x=4/5
x=4/5 hour
4/5*60=48 minutes
They met after walking 48 minutes
3*4/5=12/5=2.4 miles Fred walked 2.4 miles
2*4/5=8/5=1.6 miles john walked 1.6 miles
