Question 278370: A boat can travel from its dock to a town downriver with a 7 mph current in 10 hours. The return trip against the same current takes 15 hours. What is the speed of the boat in still water? Answer by Grinnell(63) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! OK! Goodmorning.
Let x be the speed of the boat in still water.
Let x+7 be the speed of the boat with a 7 mph current pushing it along.
Let x-7 be the speed of the boat going against the (same--mph) current coming back upstream.
Remember Rate x Time =Distance
We know the distance will be the same, SO off to the races!
(x+7)mph TIMES 10 hours E Q U A L S (x-7)mph TIMES 15 hours
10x+70=15x-105
175=5x
35=x
Therefore 35 is speed of boat in still water.
