Question 278113: it takes 5 men 3 hours to do a job if 3 men do the same job how long will it take
OK You want to find out what the MANHOURS ARE. 5x3=15 (If it took them 3DAYS, you would then use MANDAYS, which would be 15 MANDAYS.) Since you now only have 3 men doing the job, simply divide: 15 MANHOURS/3 (MEN), LEAVING YOU WITH 5 hours the three men will take to do the same job that 5 men did on only three hours! (First 'gut' observation is that with less men, it will take a longer time.)

You can put this solution on YOUR website! In problems like these, you want to find out what the MANHOURS are, or, what the MANDAYS are. You do this by multiplying the number of men (or women) on the job by the number of minutes, hours or days to do the job. Here our units are hours, SO, we are dealing with MANHOURS. 5 men take 3 hours to do a job.
THE MANHOURS ARE 15 MANHOURS. Now we have less men that are going to do the same job--it will take them longer--no brainer. How much longer? Divide the MANHOURS by the new number of men on the job. So, we divide 15 MANHOURS by 3 men, leaving you with the longer time of 5 hours. It will take three men five hours to do the same job it took 5 men to do in three hours.
