You can put this solution on YOUR website! In a family there are two cars. The sum of the average miles per gallon obtained by the two cars in a particular week is 65 . The first car has consumed 20 gallons during that week, and the second has consumed 25 gallons, for a total of 1475 miles driven by the two cars combined. What was the average gas mileage obtained by each of the two cars in that week?
Let the average mileage of one car be x
The average nileage of the second car will be 65-x
The first car consumed 20 gallons. so it drove for 20x miles
Similarly the second car drove for 25(65-x) miles
Their total mileage was 1475
20x+25(65-x)=1475
20x+1625-25x=1475
-5x=1475-1625
x= -150 /-5
x=30
The other car gave an average of 35 miles/gallon
