You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Using the 5-sep method, how do I solve this:
One-half of a number is 25 more than one-third of the same number. What is the number?
I am not sure what a 5-sep or 5-step method, whatever you mean, is, but I can show you how to find the number.
x = a number
1/2 of a number = 1/2 * x
1/3 of the same number = 1/3 * x
25 more than 1/3 of the same number = 1/3 * x + 25
1/2 * x = 1/3 * x + 25 (replaced "is" with an equal sign)
3/6 * x = 2/6 * x + 25 (converted fractions to 6ths)
1/6 * x = 25
x = 150 (multiplied both sides by 6)
check:
1/2 of a number = 1/3 of the same number + 25
1/2 * 150 = 1/3 * 150 + 25
75 = 50 + 25
75 = 75
