Question 275878: in a class of 147 students, 95 are taking math(M) 73 are taking science(S), and 52 are taking both math ans science. one student is picked at random. find p(taking math science or both) and p( not taking math). any help would be great but i would like to understand how to work the problem. if you could give a short explaination( i know thats not spelled right) it would be greatly appreciated.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
in a class of 147 students, 95 are taking math(M) 73 are taking science(S), and 52 are taking both math and science. one student is picked at random.
find p(taking math science or both)
-----------------------
Draw a Venn Diagram
Draw a rectangle with two intersecting circles it it.
Label one circle math; the other science.
----
Put 52 in the intersection.
Put 95-52 = 43 in the part of the math circle that is not in the intersection.
Put 73-52 = 21 in the part of the science ciecle that is not in the intersection
--------
Put 147-(52+43+21) = 31 in the rectangle but not in either circle.
-------------------------------
Find p(taking math science or both) = (52+43+21)/147 = 116/147
-----------------------------
Find p(not taking math) = (147-95)/147 = 52/147
