Let's call the unknown angle x.
The supplement of the angle x is 180 - x. (ALWAYS)
The complement of the angle x is 90 - x. (ALWAYS)
So we write
180 - x = 3(90 - x)
180 - x = 270 - 3x
Add 3x to both sides
180 + 2x = 270
Subtract 180 from both sides
2x = 90
x = 45
