Question 273883: I need help on how to simplify an equation.
This is the equation:
y=-2/5x-18
2x-3y=22
I need to find the value of x and y and can you please show me the steps?
(-2/5x is a fraction)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
This is the equation:
y = -2%2F5x - 18
2x - 3y = 22
:
get rid of the denominator in the 1st equation multiply by 5, results
5y = -2x - 90
put it in the standard form, then subtract the 2nd equation from it
2x + 5y = -90
2x - 3y = 22
---------------subtraction eliminates x, find y
8y = -112
y = %28-112%29%2F8
y = -14
:
Use the 2nd equation to find x,
2x - 3y = 22
Substitute -14 for y
2x - 3(-14) = 22
2x - (-42) = 22
2x + 42 = 22
2x = 22 - 42
2x = -20
x = -10
:
x = -10, y = -14,

:
Check solution in original first equation
y = -2%2F5x - 18
Substitute for x and y, check for equality
-14 = -2%2F5(-10) - 18
Cancel the 5 into -10 and you have
-14 = -2(-2) - 18
-14 = +4 - 18; confirms our solutions
