You can put this solution on YOUR website! For Monday morning's staff meeting, Jim bought 2 bags of bagels and 3 packages of cream cheese and paid $12.00 (excluding sales tax). For Friday's meeting, he bought 4 bags of bagels and 2 packages of cream cheese and paid $14.00 (again, excluding sales tax). How much do bags of bagels and packages of cream cheese cost?
-------------------------
Equations:
2b + 3p = 12
4b + 2p = 14
----------------------
Multiply thru the 1st equation by 2 to get:
4b + 6p = 24
---
Subtract that equation from the 2nd equation:
-4p = -10
p = 5/2 = $2.50 (price of a package of cream cheese)
---------------------
Substitute into 2b + 3p = 12 to solve for "b":
2b + 3(5/2) = 12
2b + (15/2) = 24/2
2b = 9/2
b = 9/4 = $2.12 (price of a bag of bagels)
