Question 272398: Hello! My name is Andrew and I'm struggling with word problems....Here's the question that is getting me right now.
A bus traveled at an average rate of 60 miles per hour and then reduced its average rate to 50 miles per hour for the rest of the trip. if the 389 mile trip took 7hours, determine how long the bus traveled at each rate.
Honestly I'm confused but will make a stab at it....
50x+60x=389/7

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
this is like two trips added together ___ r * t = d

60 (x) + 50 (7 - x) = 389

60x + 350 - 50x = 389

10x = 39 ___ x = 3.9 ___ 7 - x = 3.1

3.9 hr at 60 mph and 3.1 hr at 50 mph
