A man is walking at an average speed of 4 miles per hour along a railroad track. A train going the same way at a speed of 30 mph requires 5 seconds to pass the man. How long is the train?

let the length of the train be x
The speed of the train is 30 mph
The speed of the man is 4mph
they are travelling in the same direction
the effective speed of the train will be 30-4 = 26 mph
If the end of the train has to cross the man then it has to travel the distance of the length of the train ie: x
Distance = x
speed = 26 mph
Time taken = 5 seconds
1 mile = 5280 feet
1 hour = 3600 seconds
1mile / hour = 5280 feet / 3600 seconds = 1.47 feet / second
1 mph = 1.47 feet / second
26mph = 26*1.47 feet /second = 38.22 feet / second
38.22feet/second *5 second = 191.1 feet which is the length of the train

If the man could somehow run 30 mi/hr, the train
would not be able to pass him. If the man were standing still
the length of the train would be
30%2A%285%2F3600%29+=+15%2F360 mi
15%2F360+=+1%2F24 mi
I have to subtract the man's speed from the train's speed
%2830+-+4%29%2A%285%2F3600%29+=+26%2A%285%2F3600%29
130%2F3600+=+13%2F360 mi
13%2F360+%2A+5280+=+190.67 ft
