Question 270455: if a train leaves detroit at 10 pm(est)headed west toward chicago at 70 miles per hour and a train left chicago (250 miles away on the track) at 9 pm (cst) headed east on the same track going 50 miles per hour, where would they collide (in terms of miles away from detroit)?
Answer by Greenfinch(383) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! I am not American and therefore could have problems with the times. I assume that 10pm est is the same as 9 pm cst (if not, change to suit).
The joint velocity of the two trains is 50 + 70 mph = 120 mph. The time to travel 250 miles at 120 mph is 125 minutes. So the collision happened 2 hours 5 minutes after the start. Now, the train is moving away from Detroit at 70 mph, so 2hrs 5 min at 70 mph is 145.8333333 miles from Detroit
