I cannot seem to work this problem out. I am in college algebra and usually problems like this are very easy to me....
My question- One positive number is 3 times another positive number. The difference between the 2 numbers is 34. Find the numbers.
Let x be the smaller number and y the larger number.
Then we have:
1.) y = 3*x
2.) y - x = 34
Substitute 3x for y from 1.) in equation 2.):
3*x - x = 34
Solve the above for x. Then calculate y = 3*x.
