Question 26760: Need some help please.
Question : The world record for the mile was 4 minutes and 10 seconds in 1923 and 3 minutes and 49 seconds in 1975.
a) Assuming that the record improves in a linear fashion, write an equation to predict the mile world record (in seconds) for a given year.
b) From your equation what should the world record have been in 1999? How does it compare to the actual world's record of 3 minutes and 43.13 seconda.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
From the information given we see that the record went down 21 seconds in 52 years (1975-1923 = 52 and 4:10-3:49 = 21). Therefore, the yearly loss is 21/52 or 0.4 seconds per year.

a)World record = 4:10 - 0.4(given year-1923)

b) World record for 1999 = 4:10 - 0.4(1999-1923) = 4:10 - 30.4 seconds = 3:39.6
This is very close to the actual record of 3:43.13
