Question 267201: A box measures 1/3 ft. long,1/4 ft. wide, and1/6 ft. high. Find the volume of the box in inches. Found 2 solutions by rfer, jsmallt9:Answer by rfer(16322) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The volume of a box (aka rectangular prism) is length times width times height. But before we start multiplying we should change the units to inches. (As I will explain later, it is better to change the units before the multiplication than after.
Since there are 12 inches in a foot,
1/3 foot = 1/3 * 12 = 4 inches
1/4 foot = 1/4 * 12 = 3 inches, and
1/6 foot = 1/6 * 12 = 2 inches.
Now let's calculate the volume: cubic inches
The reason you should change units at the start rather than at the end is that very few people know how many cubic inches are in a cubic foot. Many people know that 1 foot is 12 inches. But 1 cubic foot is not 12 cubic inches!! There are 12*12*12 (or 1728) cubic inches in a cubic foot!
