Let S be last year's salary, then we have S + 10% of S = $33,000, or...
S+0.1S = $33,000 Simplify.
1.1S = $33,000
S = $33,000/(1.1)
S = $30,000 This was last year's salary.

If your salary of 33,000 this year was 10% more than last year, what was last years salary?
I tried;
33,000*.1=3,300
33,000-3,300=29,700
so last year salary was $29700

If you add 10% to $29700 you get $32670, not $33000.

$33000 is 10% more than last year, so it's LY's + 0.10*LY
= 1.1* LY
LY = 33000/1.1 = $30,000
