here is the system
(i) 1%2F3x+%2B+1%2F6y+=+0
(ii) 1%2F2x+-+1%2F4y+=+2+
step 1 - multiply (i) by 6 and (ii) by 4 to get
(iii) 2x+%2B+y+=+0
(iv) 2x+-+y+=+8
step 2 - add down to get
(v) 4x+=+8
divide to get
(vi) x+=+2
solving for y we get
(vii) y+=+-4

Curiously the other tutor made at least two mistakes and came up with the right answer.
1%2F3x+%2B+1%2F68y=0
1%2F2x+-+1%2F4y+=2+
x=1/2 y=-1/4
but I suspect the equations should be
1%2F3%2Ax+%2B+1%2F6%2Ay=0
1%2F2%2Ax+-+1%2F4%2Ay+=2
which do yield x=2 and y=-4
