You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Foul ball. Suppose Charlie O達rian of the Braves hits a baseball straight upward at 150 ft/sec from a height of 5 ft.
;
Assume the formula is: h = -16t^2 + 150t + 5
:
a) Use the formula to determine how long it takes the ball to return to the earth.
When the ball strikes the ground h = 0, therefore:
-16t^2 + 150t + 5 = 0
Use the quadratic formula to find the positive solution
a=-16, b=150, c=5
t = 9.4 sec is what I got
:
b) Use the accompanying graph to estimate the maximum height reached by the ball.

Looks like max height ~ 350 ft
