Problem:
7x - 1 = -5 + 3x
:
Perform the necessary operations (+,-,/*) on both sides of the equation to get the unknown (x) on one side by itself, usually on the left but doesn't have to be
7x - 1 = -5 + 3x
Subtract 3x from both sides
7x - 3x - 1 = -5 + 3x - 3x
:
which is
4x - 1 = -5 + 0
;
or just
4x - 1 = -5
;
add 1 to both sides
4x - 1 + 1 = -5 + 1
4x + 0 = -4

or just
4x = -4

Divide both sides by 4
x =
1x = -1
