Question 26318: You live in Pennsylvania and your grandparents live in Ohio. When you are in Pennsylvania, you drive at an average rate of 55 mph. When you are in Ohio, you drive at a rate of 65 mph. The entire trip of 295 miles takes 5 hours. How long does it take to reach the Pennsylvania-Ohio boarder? How long does it take it to get from the boarder to ypur grandparents' house?

Since you know that the trip took 5 hours in total. You also know that the quanity of a speed and the its time will be lless that 5. so 5-x
Now lets say we want to evalutate the time for 65mph speed.
The quantity of 65mph and 5-x is proportional to 55 at x time, when they both equal the same distance 295 together.
EXPRESSION:
65(5-x)+55x=295
325-65x+55x=295
10x=30
x=3

Now you know that x = 3, and the 3 hours support 55mph.
To find the 65mph time; 5-3=2

Hence, for 65mph it took 2hours (time it takes to your grandpa's hourse) and for 55mph it took 3 hours (time is takes to reach the Ohio border.
