Let x be the length of the shorter piece and y the length of the longer piece.
Then we have:
1.) x + y = 25
2.) y = 5*x + 1
From 1.) we have x = 25 - y
Substitute 25 - y for x in equation 2.):
y = 5*(25 - y) + 1
y = 125 - 5y + 1
6y = 126
y = 21
Since x = 25 - y, we have x = 25 - 21 = 4
