here is the problem:
8x3+-+12x2+%2B+6x+-+9
step 1 - put (_) around first and then second pair of terms as follows:
%288x%5E3+-+12x%5E2%29+%2B+%286x+-+9%29
step 2 - find the GCF of the first and second (_)
4x%5E2%282x-3%29+%2B+3%282x-3%29
step 3- find the GCF of the entire expression to get
%282x-3%29%284x%5E2%2B3%29

2. Group terms with common factors
3. Remove the GCF of each group (making sure that there will be a common factor in each group)
4. Use distributive property to re-write

8x^3 - 12x^2 + 6x - 9
1. There is no GCF
2. (8x^3 - 12 x^2) + (6x - 9)
3. 4x^2 (2x - 3) + 3 (2x - 3) *** (2x - 3) is the common factor of each group.
