What are 2 numbers whose sum is 59 and whose product is 450?
Let x and y be the two numbers. Then we have:
1.) x + y = 59
2.) x*y = 450
From 1.) we have x = 59 - y
Substitute 59 - y for x in 2.):
(59 - y)*y = 450
59y - y^2 = 450
y^2 -59y + 450 = 0
Solve this quadratic equation for y and then, from above, calculate x = 59 - y
