Question 26144: Need help, I think I know the answer but not sure. George puts his canoe in at St. Louis. He travels for 5 hours camps the night. Then, he travels back upstream to St. Louis in 13 hours. If the rate of the current in the river is 5.5 MPH, how fast was George traveling in still water?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the speed of the boat be x
5(x+5.5)=13(x-5.5)
5x+27.5=13x-71.5
-8x=-99
x=12.375

Hence, the speed of the boat in still water is 12.375MPH.
