| Question 261028: I really need help with this problem.
An experimental surgical procedure is being studied as an alternative to the old method. Both methods are considered safe. Five surgeons perform the operation on two patients matched by age, sex, and other relevant factors.

Old Way... New Way (in minutes)
 Surgeon 1 36... 29
 Surgeon 2 55... 42
 Surgeon 3 28... 30
 Surgeon 4 40... 32
 Surgeon 5 62... 56

 a) What is the appropriate null and alternate hypothesis to determine if the new way
of performing the surgery is faster than the old way.

 b) Using α = 0.05, what is the critical value for the hypothesis test?

 c) What is the test statistic for the hypothesis test? You may find it helpful to use
excel to calculate D for each surgeon, the average D and the standard deviation of
 the Ds.

 d) Draw a conclusion for the hypothesis test. Make sure you state your conclusion
in the context of the problem.

 e) What is the p-value for the hypothesis test
For the differences i did NEW - OLD
 for part B i got -2.132
 for part C i got -2.64
for part D i got Reject Ho
 For part E i got .0291
AM I CLOSE TO GETTING THIS RIGHT? thanks

You can put this solution on YOUR website! An experimental surgical procedure is being studied as an alternative to the old method. Both methods are considered safe. Five surgeons perform the operation on two patients matched by age, sex, and other relevant factors.
Old Way... New Way (in minutes)
 Surgeon 1 36... 29
 Surgeon 2 55... 42
 Surgeon 3 28... 30
 Surgeon 4 40... 32
 Surgeon 5 62... 56

 a) What is the appropriate null and alternate hypothesis to determine if the new way of performing the surgery is faster than the old way.
 Ho: u(old)-u(new) = 0
 H1: u(old)-u(new) > 0
 -----------------------------

 b) Using alpha = 0.05, what is the critical value for the hypothesis test?
 Right-tail test for mean: t = invT(0.9505, with df = 8) = 1.8595..
Reject Ho if ts > 1.8595..
 ----------------------------------------

 c) What is the test statistic for the hypothesis test?
 I ran a 2-Sample Ttest and got ts = 0.79333...

You may find it helpful to use excel to calculate D for each surgeon, the average D and the standard deviation of the Ds.

 d) Draw a conclusion for the hypothesis test. Make sure you state your conclusion in the context of the problem.
Since the test statistic is not in the reject interval, fail to reject Ho.
This test supports concluding the new method does not reduce the operation time.

 e) What is the p-value for the hypothesis test
 p-value = 0.2257....... if df = 7.6930..
