Let one piece = x.
The other is 178 - x.
x = 46 + 178-x
add x to both sides to get
2x = 46 + 178
add the numbers to get
2x = 224
divide by 2 to get
x = 112
178-x = 178-112 = 66.
The longer piece is 112 feet.
